The Sermon on the Mount

As Jesus was wrapping up The Sermon on the Mount, recorded in the Bible by Matthew in chapters 5-7, He presented the crowds with the opportunity to make an important personal decision. Hearers were presented with a life altering choice to make their way through one of Two Gates … the narrow gate or the wide gate.
Matthew 7:13-14 (ESV) – 13 “Enter by the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the way is easy that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many. 14 For the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few.”
The two gates lead to two paths which reach two destinations. These are final destinations … and they are both eternal destinations! The narrow gate leads to a narrow path. The narrow path leads to eternal life in Heaven. The wide gate leads to a wide path. The wide path leads to eternal life in Hell. Jesus’ message is that each individual must make his ultimate choice as to which gate and path he will choose.

Every day of our lives we make decisions. Some are mundane, some are important, and one is critical. Which gate and path are you traveling? My prayer is that you are on the narrow path … the one that leads to eternity in Heaven! Don’t be deceived! Heed the message of Jesus to those following the wide path: “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. 22 On that day many will say to me, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name?’ 23 And then will I declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness (Matthew 7:21-23).'”
