In his article “The Solar System: The Sun“, Jason Lisle, Ph.D of The Institute for Creation Research writes: “At the heart of our solar system is the sun, a stable hydrogen “bomb” that gives off more energy every second than a billion major cities would use in an entire year. The sun is remarkable in its complexity and power. When we examine the science of the sun, we find that it confirms biblical creation.”
The Bible tells us that God created the sun, moon and stars on day four of His seven-day creation (Genesis 1:14-19 ESV). God placed the sun at the center of our solar system at an ideal distance of 93 million miles from earth to support His creation with continuous light and energy, to separate the night from the day, and to help man mark the passage of time. The sun declares God’s glory stating “Its rising is from the end of the heavens, and its circuit to the end of them, and there is nothing hidden from its heat (Psalm 19:1-6).”
Malachi 4:1-2 (ESV) – 1 “For behold, the day is coming, burning like an oven, when all the arrogant and all evildoers will be stubble. The day that is coming shall set them ablaze, says the Lord of hosts, so that it will leave them neither root nor branch. 2 But for you who fear (revere) my name, The Sun of Righteousness shall rise with healing in its {His} wings.”
The Prophet Malachi refers to Jesus as The Sun of Righteousness. As with our physical sun residing at the center of our solar system, Jesus resides at the center of the Christian through the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. Spurgeon refers to the physical sun and to Jesus, The Sun of Righteousness, as …
- the great motor, the first source of motive power
- the fountain from which light, life, and heat perpetually flow
- the fructifier (one who makes productive) by which fruits multiply and ripen
- the regulator that rules the day, and marks the seasons
Like our physical sun, Jesus as The Sun of Righteousness is at the center of the Bible. Any position other than the center would make the Bible just another book. Without Jesus as the center the church, the church would be just like any other man-made religious organization. As Spurgeon so aptly put it: “Not the pastor, not the church itself, not any rule or government, no bishop, no priest, and no Pope can be our center, Christ alone is our central sun. We follow as planets where he leads the way: around him we revolve, but we own no other Lord.”
Do you have Jesus, The Son of God, in your life as The Sun of Righteousness?
_____________
Holy Father, Creator of ALL, thank you for being at the center of my life as The Sun of Righteousness. Without Jesus I would be without hope, lost and undone. May ALL of my thoughts and actions be governed by the Holy Spirit that indwells me. Amen and amen.
Great article Jim … until you had mentioned the ‘Sun of Righteousness’ to me in the last few weeks, I was totally unfamiliar with its use in Malachi. Thanks for opening my eyes to another key truth in Scripture pointing us to the Lord Jesus Christ!
Blessings brother!
